<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">School winded down a week ago. I've relaxed, barbecued, brought the kids to the beach. It's only June, but I'm ready to start thinking about next year and the changes that I would like to put in place. During the school year I never have enough time to read books on the craft of teaching. I've been waiting to get my hands on these books for a while. I’ve ordered the books and they should arrive while I’m at DP Summer Convening, so I have all summer to get through them. I have a feeling that these books will be need to be read with a notebook in hand so that I can </span><a href="http://rohdesign.com/sketchnotes/" style="line-height: 1.38; text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.6667px; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">sketchnote</span></a><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> my ideas right away. </span></div>

This fall the librarian and I launched series of "Lunch and Learn" experiences for our students. We tried to find as many free live webinars that we could. We then invited our students to come into the library about once a month with their lunch to learn about something new and exciting. <br /><br />Here are some of my favorite places to find distance learning opportunities for my students:</span><br />

The focus was NASA’s 2030 mission to Mars. This was very high interest for our students as many of them had read the book over the summer and were very excited to see the movie. </span></span></div>

This investigation is critical to understanding human disease and developing new treatments.</span></span></div>

We participated in the Geography of Islam webinar this past January. On camera were returned volunteers and current volunteers from The Gambia, Morocco, and Indonesia. The current volunteers often have very spotty internet, so the biggest struggle with these webinars is spotty connections - but it’s worth it for the information. </span></span></div>

EMS Infinity Social Studies classes spent the better part of 3 weeks researching issues related to a contemporary issue in Africa that they feel passionately about. There were 6-7 assignments leading up to the culminating project which was a PSA on their issue. Upon completion, students were asked to reflect on the learning process and to create a website which captured their learning and "take aways" from the unit. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Further, a couple of students actually did videos which captured <a href="http://south-africa-video.weebly.com/how-its-made.html" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">the making of their PSA</a>. In short, dozens of tools, sites, and skills were used by students to glean information and put together their final products. The final products capture the kind of learning that takes place in a 21st Century Classroom. What was most exciting is that every student had a final product-in short, the assignment appealed to a diverse array of students and learning styles. </div>

The visual arts program that is taught at HMS is not the art program so many adults may remember being a part of when they were kids. Ellen infuses a culturally responsive lens in her practice. Students in grades 6th through 8th study and create both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional art from around the world. Students learn about and create art inspired by artists from North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. The mission of teams was to research natural disasters, choose one and find ways that people can prepare, stay safe, and rebuild after natural disasters. In addition to that they had to build an autonomous robot that would need to take part in head to head robot competition. All of that while staying true to the core values of the First Lego League. Pop quiz, hotshot. What do geometry, aliens and the augmented reality gaming platform all have in common?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, tahoma, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 19.453125px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
A: All were spotted last Friday at Edmunds Middle School in Burlington.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, tahoma, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 19.453125px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
As part of a unit on exploring place, educators Laura Botte and Katie Wyndorf are having their students work with the free iOS app ARIS, an open-source game-creation platform. To kick things off, they collaborated with Angelique Fairbrother, technology coordinator for Franklin West SU, in bringing an introductory ARIS game into Edmunds’ classrooms. And out into the hallways. Also sometimes under the desks and on top of the lockers.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: verdana, tahoma, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 19.453125px; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
The two classes of 6th graders played “Shape Invaders”, a game where aliens ask for help with geometry. Students had to locate and scan QR codes scattered around the school, using them to collect various shapes. In order to keep the aliens happy, students then calculated the perimeter and area of each shape.</div>

Students worked in teams to solve the clues necessary to come up with the area and perimeter of each shape — skills not usually encountered in 6th grade math. With a little help and a whole lot of persistence, the aliens were appeased and the students got an introduction to the ARIS platform.</div>

Last week Dan Treinis and I each received Maker Bot Replicator 2s, underwritten by the Tarrant Institute. We are working in parallel to roll out the new technology with our middle school students at Edmunds and Hunt Middle Schools.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
We began last week by introducing the technology to each of our classes with live demonstrations and a short how-it-works introduction.</div>
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_503" style="background-color: #f3f3f3; border-bottom-left-radius: 3px; border-bottom-right-radius: 3px; border-top-left-radius: 3px; border-top-right-radius: 3px; border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221); margin: 10px auto; padding: 4px 0px 0px; text-align: center; width: 232px;">
<a href="http://blog.uvm.edu/tiie-vlog/files/2013/10/3d1.jpg" style="border: none; color: #265e15; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;"><img alt="3d1" class="size-full wp-image-503 " height="166" src="http://blog.uvm.edu/tiie-vlog/files/2013/10/3d1.jpg" style="background-image: url(http://blog.uvm.edu/tiie-vlog/wp-content/themes/mistylook/img/shadow.gif); background-position: 100% 100%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 0px none; margin: 12px 0px; padding: 0px;" width="222" /></a><br />
<div class="wp-caption-text" style="font-size: 11px; line-height: 17px; padding: 0px 4px 5px;">
Students at Edmunds Middle School examine their new 3D printer.</div>
</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
At the end of each class we raffled off the completed piece and the students loved it!</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
The Maker Bots came pre-loaded with an SD card that had several designs that we could print to test the machine. The initial setup was relatively easy so our next challenge is installing the makerware on our computers. The makerware traces the 3D models students create, then writes the code that the Maker Bot uses to precisely deposit the extruded plastic filament.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
Both Dan and I are very familiar with <a href="http://www.sketchup.com/" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(153, 102, 51); border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #265e15; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;">Google Sketch Up</a> and so are our students so we hope to use Sketch Up to create the models that we will print with the Maker Bot. So far I have been very impressed with the quality of the print and reliability of the machine.</div>
<div style="line-height: 1.6em; margin-bottom: 0.7em; margin-top: 0.7em; padding: 0px;">
More to come as we begin printing our own work this week!</div>
<div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_506" style="background-color: #f3f3f3; border-bottom-left-radius: 3px; border-bottom-right-radius: 3px; border-top-left-radius: 3px; border-top-right-radius: 3px; border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221); margin: 10px auto; padding: 4px 0px 0px; text-align: center; width: 232px;">
